Support Group

Be sure that you actively seek out the support and information you need to help you cope with the emotional distress and toll of caregiving. And whether or not you can turn to your family and friends for support, it might be a good idea to participate in a caregiver support group. Run either by trained professionals or peers, caregiver support groups provide a venue for families who are caring for loved ones to interact with others in the same situation. More than just venting or complaining about problems, these types of groups can offer the opportunity to share practical ways of dealing with the jumble of feelings that inevitably arise. In these groups, people evolve very real solutions to the day-to-day problems they encounter and try out more effective coping skills with the help of others. Studies show that involvement in support groups goes a long way in keeping a loved on at home and out of nursing homes as well as reducing the stress or depression that can result from caregiving burnout.

Aphasia Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (AFPI) is one of the groups that can help provide the support you need.
