Verbal Expression

Sometimes, people with aphasia find it difficult to find the exact word they want so they resort to defining or describing it. This symptom that resembles beating around the bush is called circumlocution.

A paraphasia is an incorrect word that is substituted for an intended word. For example, the person might say, "I'm with my husband." when he actually means "wife." Sometimes he or she may use nonsense words, called neologisms, such as "peminoes" for "slippers." Sounds may also get reversed such as "comtuper" for "computer".

With the symptom of agrammatism, the person with aphasia may omit small words so that his or her sentences sound like a telegram, e.g., "I tell son go". In cases of extreme agrammatism, he or she may only be able to utter a single word to express a complete sentence. For example, he or she might say "water" instead of "Give me a glass of water". When aphasia is severe, the person may be able only to say a stereotypic utterance. This may be real or nonsense word that is repeatedly spoken to mean many different things.
