Experience has taught us only too well that after suffering from brain injury, more often ushering in the aphasic condition, individuals with aphasia and their families are now burdened with one dilemma: what next? All too often, they are beset by either a feeling of complacency or worse, hopelessness. Such predicament is largely due to the absence of a support group which is singularly dedicated to work for a better life for people living with aphasia. It is for this reason that the idea of the Aphasia Foundation of the Philippines Inc. was born.

The APHASIA FOUNDATION OF THE PHILIPPINES, INC. (AFPI) formerly known as the Aphasia Association of the Philippines, is a non-profit, non-stock service organization that aims to provide assistance and support to people with aphasia and their families and caregivers. The board of officers of the foundation is composed of stroke victims - mostly aphasic - and caregivers who, given their condition and experience, have taken that crucial step towards spearheading efforts to provide support not otherwise available. The AFPI was formed on its first meeting held in July 31, 1999 participated by a group of concerned individuals living with aphasia.

The AFPI, being a pioneer idea, will need a considerable amount of resources to bring its goals to fulfillment. As a foundation, it can be said to have that particular assurance: that is to work tirelessly, with realistic expectations and boundless optimism, to provide assistance where it is called for.
